From the Pope

The “Pope Francis Hospital Ship” has arrived in the Archdiocese of Belem, and is set to begin work in areas of the Amazon region which are accessible only by river.

Pope Francis himself noted his satisfaction at the initiative bearing his name, expressing his hope that the hospital ship “will bring the Word of God and offer access to better health care to the most needy people” along a stretch of the Amazon extending about 620 miles.

The pope said the “river hospital is above all a response to the Lord’s mandate, who continues to send His disciples to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick.”

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Realizing that some of the changes we have made at St John’s and Christ the King are challenging, I want to express my gratitude for your understanding. I will be honest, there will be some more things that will change as we go forward. The reason for these are many, but overall it is for the health of our parish life. I simply cannot offer the schedule you have been used to here on a daily basis. If I am going to serve you in the ways you desire and expect, I need to adjust things so I am energized as it will do none of us any good to run myself into the ground and burn out. We know that changes in life are never easy, but they are necessary. I would also like to thank you for the welcoming you have offered to me. The routine is getting much more comfortable each day, and things are slowing down a bit, which is needed as we prepare to enter into a very busy time of year with school starting, CCD classes getting underway and regular parish council meeting scheduled to start up.
NEW DEAN
Congratulations to Fr. Doug Robertson of Our Lady of Peace as he has been appointed as the new dean of the Marshfield Deanery. This is an office of governance that can place many external demands upon a pastor in addition to his normal ministry. I am grateful for his acceptance of this role, and I look forward to serving with Fr. Doug in this area. In addition to our 2 parishes, the Marshfield Deanery is composed of the following parishes:
  • The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Auburndale, St. Kilian in Blenker and St. Michael in Hewitt; served by Fr. Murali Rayappan
  • Corpus Christi in Bakersfield and Sacred Heart of Jesus in Marshfield; served by Fr. Keith Kitzhaber
  • Our Lady of Peace in Marshfield served by Very Rev. Doug Robertson
  • St. Andrew in Rozellville and St. Joseph in Stratford served by Fr. Sengole Vethanayagam

RURAL LIFE DAY
– FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 13TH
It often seems that for many of us, our rural roots are getting more and more frayed each year, but our diocese is very much a rural diocese as agriculture is the backbone of our way of life. Without fresh, nutritious food delivered to our grocery stores each day, our world would not continue as it does. The Diocese of La Crosse recognizes this dependence on rural life, and each year sets apart one day to celebrate rural life. This year will be the 39th anniversary of Rural Life Day, and will be held at Otter Creek Farms, owned & operated by the family of Dan and Lori Ortner and Joe and Marce Ortner located at 6608 County Rd A in Pittsville. The day will begin with a Mass celebrated by Bishop William Callahan at 10:00 AM, followed by lunch and recognition of Century Farms throughout the Diocese of La Crosse, the Outstanding Farm Family and Friend of Rural life along with the blessing of crops and machinery. All are welcome; if you are able, please make plans to join us on the farm for a special day.
God bless Fr Jim

Great Adventure Bible Study: Ephesians & Romans! You are encouraged to attend this first time ever offered Bible Study at St. John’s in two sessions. From September 9th - October 27th, Ephesians will be the focus of study. Ephesians (Discover Your Inheritance) was one of St. Paul’s most widely circulated writings; come find out why! Then from January 5th through February 23rd, Romans will be offered. Paul’s letter to the Romans (The Gospel of Salvation) has been at the center of reflection, conversion and controversy from the very beginning. As other Great Adventure Bible Studies, Jeff Cavins along with Thomas Smith and Andrew Swafford will bring a greater understanding of these books of the bible. Registration forms can be found in the entranceways of the church.

From the Pope

Pope Francis announced Thursday that he is giving 6,000 blessed rosaries to Catholic communities in Syria as a sign of his closeness on the Marian Feast of the Assumption.

“Prayer made with faith is powerful! We continue to pray the rosary for peace in the Middle East and in the whole world,” Pope Francis said Aug. 15 in his Angelus message for the Assumption of Mary.

The pope blessed the rosaries made by the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need, and said that the Syrian families that lost someone because of the war are close to his heart.

THE SOLEMNITY IF THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY INTO HEAVEN
This past week we celebrated the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, an important feast day for Catholic Christians for many reasons: for the glorification of God, the completion of His redemptive work and the theology of the Incarnation to name a few. But what does it mean for our personal faith journeys? The doctrines and dogmas of our church must have practical effects in our faith lives, and the Assumption is no exception. We will begin with a bit of background.

History of the Assumption:
The Feast of the Assumption is a very old feast of the Church, celebrated universally by the sixth century. The feast was originally celebrated in the East, where it is known as the Feast of the Dormition, a word which means "the falling asleep." The earliest printed reference to the belief that Mary's body was assumed into Heaven dates from the fourth century, in a document entitled "The Falling Asleep of the Holy Mother of God." The document is written in the voice of the Apostle John, to whom Christ on the Cross had entrusted the care of His mother, and recounts the death, laying in the tomb, and Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. Tradition variously places Mary's death at Jerusalem or at Ephesus, where John was living.

A Required Belief:
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life is a defined dogma of the Catholic Church. On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII, exercising papal infallibility, declared in Munificentissimus Deus that it is a dogma of the Church "that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory." As a dogma, the Assumption is a required belief of all Catholics; anyone who publicly dissents from the dogma, Pope Pius declared, "has fallen away completely from the divine and Catholic Faith."

While the Eastern Orthodox believe in the Dormition, they object to the papal definition of the dogma, seeing it as unnecessary, since belief in Mary's bodily assumption, tradition holds, goes back to apostolic times.
Pope Pius XII, in the text explaining his definition of the dogma of the Assumption, refers repeatedly to the Blessed Virgin's death before her Assumption, and the consistent tradition in both the East and the West holds that Mary did die before she was assumed into Heaven. However, since the definition of the Assumption is silent on this question, Catholics can legitimately believe that Mary did not die before the Assumption.

Why it is important
The Assumption offers us additional assurance that we too, who have been baptized into Christ’s death and shared in His Body through the Eucharist, also will experience a resurrection of our bodies. Christ wasn’t the exception for the human race in this sense. Rather, He points the way forward to a greater, more glorious future in which we are all invited to share. This is reinforced by the truth that already another one from the human race has already followed Him into Heaven--Mary.

God bless Fr Jim

From the Church

Kendrick Castillo, an 18 year-old who died in May while helping disarm a school shooter in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, was honored by the Knights of Columbus on Tuesday night with the Caritas Medal.

“And as we go through life, just remember, be like Kendrick. Be selfless,” John Castillo, father of Kendrick Castillo, said upon accepting the Caritas Medal on behalf of his son at the annual Knights of Columbus State Dinner on Tuesday.

“I wish could say I taught Kendrick those things. There’s a few things I did teach him,” Castillo said about his son’s reputation for service. “But in all actuality, he was the angel who saved my life, who taught me how to live. I will never forget him.”
